    This final episode of the 2016-17 year produced by the 4th period team features a review of the political and social events of the past four years, a tutorial on how to fold origami cranes, and a reflection on three years of the AME experience.

    SUMMER EMPLOYMENT?!

    • SFPUC is offering paid internships for ages young people ages 16 to 20. Upon completion, you will receive a Solar Panel Certification! Please see Ms. Nina or the Beacon for more details.
    • Attn. Seniors: SFUSD is looking for workers to work with San Francisco youth this summer! You will receive four units of CCSF credit that are CSU transferable * 10-20 units of SFUSD credits - including credit recovery options. $13.00 per hour! Please see

    • City Works Internship for current Juniors and Seniors. This opportunity introduces students to the fields of Architecture & Urban Planning, Engineering & Design, Finance & Accounting, Communications & Government Relations, and Operations &
    Environmental Management. Students earn a $400 stipend for completing a 2 week job readiness training and then are transferred to a 8 week paid internship starting at $14/hr.
    • Community Safety Initiative: The CSI Program is a safe space for youth to learn, live, and dream without the fear of ridicule, judgment, or low expectations. Join a group with a career focus that meets your interests and get paid for leadership opportunities and experiences that can lead to future success. Includes $150 weekly stipend for three
    weeks, then a paid internship. (For rising 9th graders and above).

    Did you know that every 107 seconds, someone in America is sexually assaulted? Join Puma Prevent to
    educate yourself and others about issues related to sexual harassment and assault. Together we can stop
    sexual violence. We meet every Friday at lunch in room 235.

    PUMA ACADEMY

    Are you an aspiring athlete but are not sure if you'll make the grades to play? Enroll in Puma Academy and get support in making sure you're eligible to play. Puma Academy is open to all current athletes and aspiring athletes (even if you are not planning to play sports this school year). Please come to the Teen Center for more information.

    Get help with your homework and access all the tools you need at Beacon Study Hall. We're in room 235, next to the Teen Center.

    FREE WELLNESS ZUMBA CLASS EVERY THURSDAY!

    Every Thursday from 5:30-6:30pm the Beacon will be hosting a FREE Wellness Zumba Class in the Burton cafeteria! At the end of every class, there will be a short Wellness presentation and a free bag of fresh produce. We will provide childcare for family members too young to participate. See flyer here.

    SCRIPT-ED AT BURTON!

    ScriptED is a tuition-free program offered by The Beacon, and it equips students with the fundamental coding skills and professional experiences that together create access to careers in technology. The course is taught by volunteer experienced software developers who lead students through a set curriculum. At the end of the course, students get to apply their new coding skills in a paid summer internship where they gain the experience and confidence necessary to pursue careers in technology. 

    ScriptED starts at Burton on Tuesday, January 10th and will take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45 - 5:15pm.

    BACKPACKING CLUB


    Backpacking Club meets every Friday during lunch in Room 116, Mr. Pearson's room. Please refer students to the Wellness Center (Room 219) if they have any questions.

    BOARD GAMES CLUB

    Do you love playing monopoly, sorry and other card/board games? Join Board Game Club, which meets Fridays at 3:35 in Mr. Schwartz' room.

    GIRLS' GROUP

    Are you a girl who wants a cool space to speak on issues you care about? Join Girl's Group, which meets every other Friday during lunch in the Teen Center. Snacks will be provided.

    FULL MEAL VENDING!

    New this week, the vending machine in the dining area is now open! It's a full meal vending machine filled with fresh sandwiches, wraps, and salads for a quick easy meal on the go. All you need is your pin number and birthday, no cash necessary. Come check it out!

    BLACK STUDENT UNION, MONDAYS AT LUNCH

    The BSU meets weekly on Mondays during lunch in room 218. Remember you don't have to be black to be proud...all are welcome!
